Eight Values of Free Expression

The Most Important Values:

I believe that one of the most important values of free expression is Individual Self-Fulfillment. This value focuses on allowing people to express themselves freely, which in turn helps them create their own identity. Being able to voice their opinions, beliefs, and ideas allows individuals to explore who they are and what they stand for. Without this, people are forced to suppress their thoughts, and this can be harmful to personal growth. 

Individual Self-Fulfillment is not just about speaking; it's about discovering and shaping yourself through speech. As noted by The Fire, free speech allows individuals to exercise liberty and develop a sense of identity. A relevant quote from Justice Thurgood Marshall explains that "The First Amendment serves not only as the needs for policy, but also the human spirit - a spirit that demannds self expersion." Marshall's statement highlights that free speech exists to protect people's individual identity. When people can share their ideas, even ones that may not be popular, they are exercising individual self-fulfillment. This personal empowerment is the core reason why speech is so essential in any free society. 

The Most Personal to Me:

For me, Individual Self-Fulfillment is the value of free speech that resonates most. In today’s culture, there is so much pressure to conform and avoid controversy, especially with the rise of cancel culture. People are often afraid to share opinions that go against the mainstream, which limits personal growth and creativity. Free speech combats this by allowing people to explore their thoughts openly, and in doing so, it helps them build a sense of identity.

I also find this value very personal because it’s about connection and understanding. When people are able to be themselves and share there owe opions is allows for a better understanding of them as a person and also give use a new perspective from their opinion. This type of engagement is what helps push society forward with discussions because if everyone were silent and no new ideas were being pushed and being fought back against, then society would not be the way that it is today.

Individual Self-Fulfillment also relates to creativity and innovation. Being able to speak and express unique ideas encourages people to experiment, think critically, and push boundaries. Without individual self-fulfillment, we would not have individuality, but progress in areas such as the sciences, arts, and culture would be stalemated. Many breakthroughs in history are because people went against the norm and spoke out or took action.

Values in Action Now:

Right now, the value of Individual Self-Fulfillment is under pressure in some areas, particularly online, where cancel culture and social media outrage can intimidate people from expressing themselves. Despite this, I see encouraging signs of this value in action on platforms like YouTube and Instagram, which allow people to share thoughts, creative works, and opinions with a broad audience. Even if controversial, the ability to express oneself freely fosters identity, learning, and connection.

Ultimately, Individual Self-Fulfillment reminds us that freedom of speech is not just for society; it’s for people to grow, explore, and become who they are. Protecting this value means protecting the right to learn, experiment, and live how they want, even in a world that often prefers conformity.

Today, getting news has become easier and faster than ever. With just a glance at your phone, you can access information from all corners of the world. For me, my primary news source is Google, as it allows me to quickly find exactly what I’m looking for while providing articles from multiple outlets, giving me a broader perspective. I usually turn to Google when I want more detailed or reliable information on a specific story. Google Scholar is also a valuable tool when I need more academic or research-based sources on a topic, especially for school-related work.

I also get a lot of my news from TikTok, where short-form videos make it easy to stay up to date. These videos are useful because they present key facts in a short amount of time, often within a minute. While the content may not always be in-depth, it helps me quickly understand the situation and see how others are reacting to the same news. TikTok’s algorithm also makes it easy to discover stories I might not have actively searched for.

Speaking of reactions, X (formerly Twitter) is one of the best platforms for seeing how people respond to breaking news in real time. It provides access to millions of users who can share updates, opinions, and firsthand information as events unfold. This makes it especially useful for live updates and emerging stories. Following journalists and trusted accounts also helps me stay informed more efficiently.

Instagram is not my main source for news, but I often use it to keep up with sports news and game scores. It is also helpful for following updates about specific individuals, as you can visit their profiles to see posts and stories related to current events involving them. Many sports pages and creators provide quick highlights and summaries that are easy to consume.

Finally, family and friends play an important role in how I stay informed. They often share news I may have missed and offer different perspectives that help me better understand the stories I’m interested in. Having conversations about current events also allows me to think more critically about the information I come across online.
