Thank You for Smoking Movie Reflection

Watching Thank You for Smoking made me rethink how advertising, PR, and marketing actually work in real life. The main character, Nick Naylor, is extremely skilled at defending tobacco, even when he knows it is harmful. At first, his confidence and ability to argue any point are impressive, but as the movie goes on, it becomes clear how uncomfortable and morally questionable his job really is. It highlights the idea that just because something is legal does not mean it is right

The movie made me ask myself whether I could do a job like his, especially if I was offered a high salary like $100,000 or even $200,000 a year. While the money is definitely appealing, it would be difficult to ignore the fact that the product being promoted causes serious health problems. This shows the tension between financial success and personal ethics, and how people in these industries often have to decide what matters more.

Beyond tobacco, the film connects to other types of vice advertising like alcohol, gambling, guns, and vaping. These industries are all legal, but they can still negatively affect people’s health and behavior. Vaping is a strong modern example, especially among teenagers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, teen e-cigarette use increased dramatically in recent years, showing how marketing can influence younger audiences even when it is not intended to.

Another important part of the movie is the role of the reporter, who works to expose the truth about the tobacco industry. She shows how companies sometimes hide or downplay the dangers of their products to protect profits. Even though her methods may seem aggressive, her goal of informing the public is important. This raises the question of whether the ends justify the means, and in this case, exposing the truth feels necessary.

The movie also brings up larger legal questions about advertising. Even though products like cigarettes and alcohol are proven to be harmful, companies are still allowed to advertise them because of protections like the First Amendment. Banning all vice advertising could help reduce harm, but it would also limit freedom of speech and personal choice, which makes the issue more complicated.

Marijuana advertising adds another layer to this discussion. In some states, like Colorado, marijuana is legal and heavily marketed, while in other states, it is still illegal. Because of the internet, ads from legal states can easily reach people in states where they are not allowed. This creates confusion about what should be permitted and whether companies should be held responsible for where their ads are seen.

Overall, the movie shows that working in marketing and PR is not just about making money or being persuasive. It also involves thinking about the impact your work has on society. Thank You for Smoking makes it clear that there is often a gap between what is legal and what is ethical, and it is up to individuals to decide where they stand.

History of Personal Computers

Today, personal computers are a normal part of everyday life. Whether it’s for school, work, or entertainment, most people rely on them in some way without really thinking about it. It’s easy to forget that not too long ago, computers weren’t something individuals owned. They were massive, expensive machines used mainly by governments and large organizations. Over time, though, advances in technology made computers smaller, cheaper, and eventually accessible to everyday users.

The shift toward personal computers really took off in the 1970s and 1980s. Companies like Apple and IBM began creating computers designed for individuals rather than just professionals. At the same time, software developed by Microsoft made these machines easier to use. Instead of needing specialized knowledge, people could now use computers for writing, organizing data, and completing everyday tasks. This is when computers really started becoming common in homes, schools, and workplaces.

One of the biggest changes came with the rise of the internet in the 1990s. Personal computers were no longer just standalone devices; they became gateways to information and communication. People could send emails, browse websites, and instantly access information from around the world. For me, this is one of the most important impacts because it completely changed how we learn and communicate. Students can now research almost anything online, and businesses can connect with people globally in seconds.

Personal computers have also had a huge impact on entertainment. A lot of the media we consume today, whether it’s videos, music, or games, can be accessed or created using a computer. PC gaming, in particular, has grown into a major part of the entertainment industry. Computers also make it easier for people to create their own content, from editing videos to producing music, which has helped grow the creator economy.

At the same time, there are definitely some downsides. As computers have become more integrated into daily life, issues like privacy, cybersecurity, and screen time have become more common. It’s also worth mentioning the digital divide. Not everyone has equal access to personal computers or reliable internet, which can create disadvantages in education and job opportunities. This shows that while computers have made life easier in many ways, they’ve also introduced new challenges.

Looking ahead, personal computers are likely to keep evolving with new technology. Things like artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and virtual or augmented reality are already starting to change how we interact with computers. In the future, using a computer might feel even more natural, with voice commands or AI assistants becoming more common. Even with these changes, it’s clear that personal computers have had a huge impact on society and will continue to shape how we work, learn, and communicate.

How AI will affect my major

When thinking about how AI will affect my major of game design and the future of the industry, I feel like there is a lot to think about, especially since this is such a wide field where AI could be implemented in many different ways. From art and writing to coding and game testing, AI can be used in almost every part of the game development process. Because of this, it is hard to see AI as just one thing, since it can help in creative ways but also in more technical ways.

When doing research on the topic, I found two different articles that talk about how AI could be used more in the industry, but they have slightly different views on how it would work. In the first article, it talks about how artists and writers should not fear AI because it allows them to not be held back by the limits of the developers’ skills. Usually, writers and artists have to work within the technical constraints of what the developers can do, but AI could help bridge that gap and make their ideas easier to bring to life. This could be especially helpful for smaller teams that do not have as many resources.

In the other article, it talks about how AI should be used as a co-developer that works alongside the dev team. Instead of replacing people, it would help reduce the amount of repetitive and data-heavy tasks, such as testing, bug tracking, and balancing. This would give developers more time to focus on the creative side of making games.

Overall, both articles show that AI is not meant to take over game design, but to support it. Instead of replacing developers, AI can help them work faster and spend more time on creativity and making better games. If used correctly, AI could become an important tool that changes how games are made in the future.

Privacy, Online and Off

Privacy is something that I think I hear about at least once a week online. Online privacy has become a growing concern for many people, especially as people have become more active online. Most people don't realize it, but most kids sign up for social media around the age of 12 and are online for what will probably be the rest of their lives. Social media and digital information have become such a big part of online society that most people forget about the big privacy concerns from other people and the government.

Thinking about what would happen if something important, such as your Social Security number or your credit card number, were leaked online. This is the kind of stuff that could affect your entire life if it got into the wrong hands. I feel like this happens to everyone at least once, but my debit card number got leaked, and someone made a purchase from across the country in San Fransico while I'm in Atlanta. Luckily, my bank notified me, and I got everything sorted out, but it's crazy to think that it could happen to anyone.

The government should focus its efforts on creating and implementing stronger privacy laws that protect people’s personal information online, while companies should be required to clearly explain how they collect, store, and share data. There should also be strict punishments for businesses or hackers who misuse or steal private information for their own gain. I think that the fact that there have to be whole companies that specialize in getting your information off the internet or better protecting it tells a lot about online privacy for your data. The government should also invest more in better cybersecurity systems and educating the public about online safety and protecting your data. By holding companies accountable, the government can help reduce data leaks and protect citizens better online.

We can protect our privacy by being careful about what we share online. This includes using strong passwords, changing them often, and never giving out personal information like Social Security or credit card numbers unless it is absolutely necessary. Turning on two-factor authentication, avoiding suspicious links, and checking privacy settings on social media can also help. It’s important to monitor bank statements and online accounts as well for unusual activity, so problems can be caught quickly.

Eight Values of Free Expression

The Most Important Values:
I believe that one of the most important values of free expression is Individual Self-Fulfillment. This value focuses on allowing people to express themselves freely, which in turn helps them create their own identity. Being able to voice their opinions, beliefs, and ideas allows individuals to explore who they are and what they stand for. Without this, people are forced to suppress their thoughts, and this can be harmful to personal growth.

Individual Self-Fulfillment is not just about speaking; it's about discovering and shaping yourself through speech. As noted by The Fire, free speech allows individuals to exercise liberty and develop a sense of identity. A relevant quote from Justice Thurgood Marshall explains that "The First Amendment serves not only as the needs for policy, but also the human spirit - a spirit that demannds self expersion." Marshall's statement highlights that free speech exists to protect people's individual identity. When people can share their ideas, even ones that may not be popular, they are exercising individual self-fulfillment. This personal empowerment is the core reason why speech is so essential in any free society.

The Most Personal to Me:

For me, Individual Self-Fulfillment is the value of free speech that resonates most. In today’s culture, there is so much pressure to conform and avoid controversy, especially with the rise of cancel culture. People are often afraid to share opinions that go against the mainstream, which limits personal growth and creativity. Free speech combats this by allowing people to explore their thoughts openly, and in doing so, it helps them build a sense of identity.

I also find this value very personal because it’s about connection and understanding. When people are able to be themselves and share there owe opions is allows for a better understanding of them as a person and also give use a new perspective from their opinion. This type of engagement is what helps push society forward with discussions because if everyone were silent and no new ideas were being pushed and being fought back against, then society would not be the way that it is today.

Individual Self-Fulfillment also relates to creativity and innovation. Being able to speak and express unique ideas encourages people to experiment, think critically, and push boundaries. Without individual self-fulfillment, we would not have individuality, but progress in areas such as the sciences, arts, and culture would be stalemated. Many breakthroughs in history are because people went against the norm and spoke out or took action.

Values in Action Now:

Right now, the value of Individual Self-Fulfillment is under pressure in some areas, particularly online, where cancel culture and social media outrage can intimidate people from expressing themselves. Despite this, I see encouraging signs of this value in action on platforms like YouTube and Instagram, which allow people to share thoughts, creative works, and opinions with a broad audience. Even if controversial, the ability to express oneself freely fosters identity, learning, and connection.

Ultimately, Individual Self-Fulfillment reminds us that freedom of speech is not just for society; it’s for people to grow, explore, and become who they are. Protecting this value means protecting the right to learn, experiment, and live how they want, even in a world that often prefers conformity.

My Top 5 News Sources

Today, getting news has become easier and faster than ever. With just a glance at your phone, you can access information from all corners of the world. For me, my primary news source is Google, as it allows me to quickly find exactly what I’m looking for while providing articles from multiple outlets, giving me a broader perspective. I usually turn to Google when I want more detailed or reliable information on a specific story. Google Scholar is also a valuable tool when I need more academic or research-based sources on a topic, especially for school-related work.

I also get a lot of my news from TikTok, where short-form videos make it easy to stay up to date. These videos are useful because they present key facts in a short amount of time, often within a minute. While the content may not always be in-depth, it helps me quickly understand the situation and see how others are reacting to the same news. TikTok’s algorithm also makes it easy to discover stories I might not have actively searched for.

Speaking of reactions, X (formerly Twitter) is one of the best platforms for seeing how people respond to breaking news in real time. It provides access to millions of users who can share updates, opinions, and firsthand information as events unfold. This makes it especially useful for live updates and emerging stories. Following journalists and trusted accounts also helps me stay informed more efficiently.

Instagram is not my main source for news, but I often use it to keep up with sports news and game scores. It is also helpful for following updates about specific individuals, as you can visit their profiles to see posts and stories related to current events involving them. Many sports pages and creators provide quick highlights and summaries that are easy to consume.

Finally, family and friends play an important role in how I stay informed. They often share news I may have missed and offer different perspectives that help me better understand the stories I’m interested in. Having conversations about current events also allows me to think more critically about the information I come across online.
