Privacy is something that I think I hear about at least once a week online. Online privacy has become a growing concern for many people, especially as people have become more active online. Most people don't realize it, but most kids sign up for social media around the age of 12 and are online for what will probably be the rest of their lives. Social media and digital information have become such a big part of online society that most people forget about the big privacy concerns from other people and the government.
Thinking about what would happen if something important, such as your Social Security number or your credit card number, were leaked online. This is the kind of stuff that could affect your entire life if it got into the wrong hands. I feel like this happens to everyone at least once, but my debit card number got leaked, and someone made a purchase from across the country in San Fransico while I'm in Atlanta. Luckily, my bank notified me, and I got everything sorted out, but it's crazy to think that it could happen to anyone.
The government should focus its efforts on creating and implementing stronger privacy laws that protect people’s personal information online, while companies should be required to clearly explain how they collect, store, and share data. There should also be strict punishments for businesses or hackers who misuse or steal private information for their own gain. I think that the fact that there have to be whole companies that specialize in getting your information off the internet or better protecting it tells a lot about online privacy for your data. The government should also invest more in better cybersecurity systems and educating the public about online safety and protecting your data. By holding companies accountable, the government can help reduce data leaks and protect citizens better online.
We can protect our privacy by being careful about what we share online. This includes using strong passwords, changing them often, and never giving out personal information like Social Security or credit card numbers unless it is absolutely necessary. Turning on two-factor authentication, avoiding suspicious links, and checking privacy settings on social media can also help. It’s important to monitor bank statements and online accounts as well for unusual activity, so problems can be caught quickly.
